PUERTO PEÑASCO, Sonora (September 3, 2026) – Encántame Resorts, a modern luxury condominium and estate development on Playa Encanto Beach along the Sea of Cortez, applauds a historic 1.8 billion peso investment, approximately $100 million, by Mexico’s federal government to fully modernize Highway 8. Sonora Governor Francisco Alfonso Durazo Montano spoke today at an inaugural ceremony on Highway 8 just north of Puerto Peñasco, marking the start of construction on the complete road rebuild between Sonoyta and Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), the only paved entry route for Arizona travelers crossing through the Lukeville and Sonoyta port of entry. Puerto Peñasco Mayor Alejandro Verdugo Angulo also addressed the crowd of local business leaders and construction teams gathered for the event.
The Governor secured the funding after negotiations with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, expanding the Sonora state highway budget from 1 billion to more than 3.4 billion pesos for 2026. Originally, 450 million pesos were designated for repairs on the corridor. The final approved plan calls for a complete modernization, including wider lanes and berms along the 60-mile corridor. Construction is underway, and the existing road will remain accessible throughout, with work expected to continue through May 2027.
The timing is critical. Puerto Peñasco welcomed 1.6 million visitors in 2025, down from 1.9 million in 2024, a 20% decline in formal lodging that translated to an estimated $115 million USD in tourism economic impact for the year. The city’s Convention and Visitors Bureau cited deteriorating road conditions on the Sonoyta corridor as a direct contributing factor in that decline.
Highway 8 already serves as a designated safety corridor equipped with bilingual signage, Green Angels to assist stranded motorists, surveillance cameras, checkpoints and increased law enforcement during peak travel periods. The 60-mile drive from the border crossing to Rocky Point typically takes about one hour under normal traffic conditions. Mexico’s $106 million highway investment nearly matches Puerto Peñasco’s entire 2025 tourism economic output and directly targets the road conditions that cost the city millions in lost visitor spending.

Once complete, the modernized Highway 8 is projected to reduce travel times, improve safety and give Arizona families, snowbirds and property investors greater confidence in making the trip year-round. Encántame Resorts, which was sold out through June and July 2026, anticipates the highway upgrade will support continued growth in occupancy and property sales in the seasons ahead.
