Tobias Kormind, Co-Founder of 77 Diamonds, commented: “An engagement ring is one of the most emotionally significant purchases many people will make, so it is fascinating to see how that commitment translates financially in different parts of the world. Of course, there is no right or wrong amount to spend on an engagement ring. The old idea that there is a particular number of months’ salary that someone should spend is increasingly outdated. What matters is finding a ring that reflects the couple, while making a purchase that is financially comfortable. Salary growth is an important part of that equation. UK earnings have increased over the past decade, but the cost of an engagement ring can still represent a substantial outlay relative to income. This makes understanding the different options available, from diamond quality and cut to carat and setting, particularly important for couples looking to get the most from their budget. Ultimately, the value of an engagement ring isn’t determined simply by its price. It is about finding something that feels special and meaningful without turning a romantic milestone into a financial headache.” Data tables and sources*Average annual wage data across nations sourced from The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)*For average engagement ring spend vs earnings by nation data sources, see data tables Full data tables can be viewed online here |
